Seaspan Energy and MOL establish North America’s first annual LNG bunkering contract for car carriers, shifting the Pacific coast away from spot deals
28 May 2026

Contracted liquefied natural gas bunkering has officially arrived on North America’s West Coast. Seaspan Energy and Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines formalized the region's first annual term supply agreement for car carriers at the Port of Vancouver. The historic deal signals a major structural shift away from volatile spot market operations toward predictable, long-term fuel procurement for a rapidly expanding dual-fuel fleet.
MOL completed its inaugural bunkering under the new framework on April 29. Since executing its first regional operation in March 2025, the company had operated entirely on a transactional basis. Moving to annual terms marks a decisive step toward stability.
Supporting that commitment is Seaspan's strategic expansion down to Long Beach, California. Two purpose-built bunkering vessels now cover both Vancouver and Long Beach simultaneously, placing a dependable fuel supply at the two most active gateways on the Pacific coast.
Car carriers represent some of the highest-volume adopters of alternative fuels as new builds enter service on Pacific trade lanes. For global shipping lines, locked-in supply is essential to justifying fleet investments of this magnitude. Spot access alone cannot underpin the multi-million-dollar vessel decisions that maritime executives are now making.
Looking further ahead, the agreement explicitly includes a pathway to bio-LNG integration. Seaspan completed its first ship-to-ship bio-LNG bunkering at Long Beach last year, demonstrating technical readiness ahead of commercial demand. Both companies have signaled an intent to deepen that collaboration as renewable supply chains scale globally.
North America’s Pacific coast has lagged European and Asian maritime hubs for years in clean fuel infrastructure. That gap is finally narrowing.
