Galveston’s new LNG bunker port arrives in 2027, bringing cleaner fuel options to a coast ready for change
24 Sep 2025

Pilot LNG and Seapath Group plan to open the Galveston LNG Bunker Port by 2027, creating the first dedicated liquefied natural gas fueling site for ships on the US Gulf Coast as operators look for cleaner alternatives to conventional marine fuels.
The project is intended to fill a long-standing gap in LNG bunkering infrastructure in the region. Shipping companies have been slow to adopt LNG, which emits less sulphur and carbon dioxide than heavy fuel oil or marine diesel, because supply points remain limited.
The facility will be located at Shoal Point in Texas City and is expected to serve nearby hubs including Port Houston and the Port of Galveston. Unlike fixed terminals, the port will distribute LNG by barge, a model the developers say provides flexibility and can scale with demand.
Regulatory approvals have already been secured from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas Railroad Commission, clearing a key hurdle for construction. The permits signal growing state-level support for LNG as a transitional marine fuel.
Developers face operational challenges, including ensuring steady LNG supply, maintaining reliability and managing methane leakage, an issue closely watched by environmental groups and regulators.
If completed on schedule, the port would add new fueling capacity to one of the country’s busiest shipping corridors. The companies expect the project to support wider adoption of LNG-powered vessels and potentially encourage further investment in similar sites across the US as the sector responds to tightening emissions rules.
